Mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas are the smallest free-living microorganisms .
There are nine species of the genus Mycoplasma and one of the genus Ureaplasma that cause disease in human beings .
It causes pneumonia , colds , pharyngitis , sinusitis , bronchitis , rashes , heart infection , liver disease , arthritis , and disease of the brain and spinal cord .
Mycoplasmas may also cause a red , bumpy rashusually on the trunk or backthat is occasionally vesicular (with blisters ) .
Inflammation of the heart muscle and the covering of the heart ( pericardium ) is rare but can be caused by mycoplasmas .
In general , ureaplasma infections are mild , however .
