What is Bronchitis
Acute bronchitis is a communicable disease of infancy characterized by cough, runny nose, low-grade fever, and wheezing. It can be caused by many viruses, bacteria, and mycoplasmas. The symptoms include fever and cough, with production of sputum. Diagnosis is established by medical history and physical examination of the chest. Treatment usually consists of the administration of fluids, humidified air, decongestants, and antibiotics, the last if a bacterial cause is suspected.
Asthmatic bronchitis is an acute, recurrent illness characterized by cough and wheezing; it commonly occurs in children under five years of age who are allergic to dust, molds, or other agents. It is usually caused by viruses, such as rhinoviruses and respiratory syncytial virus, but other infectious agents, such as bacteria and mycoplasmas, may also be involved. In asthmatic bronchitis, there is a tendency to wheeze with each upper respiratory viral infection. Children who have a propensity for asthmatic bronchitis usually improve with age. Treatment consists of the administration of oxygen, humidity, and agents that dilate the bronchii.
