The Side Effects of Anti Inflammatory Drugs
Anti-inflammatory steroids block the production of eicosanoids by preventing the release of arachidonic acid from phospholipids. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, work in a different manner. They block enzymes that convert arachidonic acid to prostaglandins. Aspirin blocks different enzymes on alternative pathways so that the drugs can relieve inflammation brought on by different causes. The leukotrienes are also inflammatory agents. Drugs that block the enzymes that produce leukotrienes are effective treatments for asthma.
