Influenza is characterized by the acute onset of fever, chills, malaise, headache, diffuse muscle ache, cough, and sore throat. There are high morbidity and mortality rates among patients with recurrent heart failure; chronic pulmonary disease such as cystic fibrosis, poorly controlled asthma, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, or bronchiectasis; chronic kidney or nephrosis disease; metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus; or malignancy or other immunodeficiency states.
The manufacture of influenza vaccine is complicated by the many influenza viruses and by the major shifts in chemical configuration that these viruses undergo every five to 10 years. Routine immunization against influenza viruses is not recommended for healthy individuals. During epidemics, those at high risk of developing severe influenza or complications should receive the currently available vaccine before the respiratory disease season.
