strep throat
Acute rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease of the heart, joints, central nervous system, and subcutaneous tissues that develops after a throat infection with group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal organisms or after untreated “strep throat.”
Rheumatic fever is particularly important because of the heart disease that usually ensues.
Cause and Symptom
When a streptococcal throat infection goes untreated, most patients recover without complications. Some, however, develop fever, malaise, anorexia, and joint pain two to three weeks later.
Upon examination, the striking findings are pallor, rapid pulse, muffled heart sounds, and heart murmur or murmurs.
Other symptoms can include a rash called erythema marginatum and a movement disorder called chorea (Sydenham chorea, or St. Vitus' dance).
